These two drawings are a pair and work together to express a small part of myself. They were created in my third year of University when I was struggling to find the correct path to take my art on. I was playing with the idea of text in a drawing. The written text below is what is written within each drawing.
“You want to know what happened to me today? I was on my way to school; it was about 9:00 o’clock in the morning, my favourite time of day. The sun was shining, the snow was sparkling and the one thing that would have topped it off would have been a cup of Java! So I stopped in at Timmies and realized I didn’t have any change … disappointment loomed across my face … the sun was still shining and the snow was still glittering but it was looking down that I was going to have enough change for a coffee. I knew it was not the end of the world but I was determined. I had two Tim’s Cards in my wallet that were seriously diminished in funds, but I thought if I combined the two quarters I had and the possible 80 cents on the Tim’s Cards I’d have the $1.24 I needed for my medium regular with change to spare! When I approached the counter I explained my method of payment … but before I could pay the man standing behind me (tall, a few grey hairs, unshaven, construction boots) stepped forward and handed me a Toonie. I wouldn’t accept it at first but he told me someone had bought him a coffee a little while ago and this was his chance to repay it. I had a perma smile the rest of the day!”
“My Favourite place in the world … is beautiful, amazing, makes me happy and sometimes sad, makes me feel at one with myself and at the same time makes me feel small. This place is the rock behind Lot 293 Go Home Lake. It’s just north of the beach and looks out at Paradise Bay. The wind no matter what time of day or what time of year blows off the lake and right up the face of the rock. The trees are all bent over from its ever powerful breeze. When I stand there and look out over the bay, surrounded by massive evergreens I change … I reflect and sometimes I just don’t think at all. I become at peace. I fall in love. I miss certain people. I take a deep breath breathing in the fresh air and I remember how magical the simple things are. The baby evergreen growing up out of pure rock. The seagull perched on the top of the navigational lights in the middle of the bay. The cloud that I can make look like anything. These moments are what I treasure. They are special and remind you of how beautiful life is. One song that reflects this feeling is “I Hope you Dance” by Lee Ann Womack … all I have to say to you is … Choose to dance.”
